FAQ

What is Nerve root block?

Nerve root block is a type of spinal injection which is given to reduce inflammation around a particular nerve. This is especially important in case of disc herniation in either lumbar or cervical spine where one or more of the nerves are compressed. The aim of the procedure is to deliver local anaesthetics and steroid injection around a named nerve as identified during clinical examination and MRI finding. The injection help in good number of people in providing lasting relief but in other also helps to confirm that the pain patient is experiencing is indeed coming from the compressed nerve seen on MRI scan.

What is caudal epidural injection?

Caudal epidural injection is a type of spinal injection which is injected in the bottom of the spine and it delivers steroids and local anaesthetics to multiple nerves at the same time. This type of injection is helpful when people have spinal stenosis and compression of multiple nerves.

What is Facet joint injection?

The facet joint is present in the back of the spine and allows some movement. In some patients, they can become arthritis and inflamed and cause back pain. We can either inject directly on the facet or the nerve which supplies the facet joint. If we inject on the nerve around the facet joint, then the procedure is called Medial branch block. These injections do not cure the problem but help in pain management and particularly help in breaking the cycle of pain. The interim pain relief must be utilised to work more effectively with physiotherapists for long-term relief.

What happens on the day?

You will be given the date by the hospital and depending on the time of injection you will be called to attend either in the morning or afternoon. You will be asked not to eat anything for 6 hours before the procedure but can have clear fluid i.e. water up to two hours before the procedure. After the injection, the nurse will assess you and you will be able to go home in two to four hours. You will need someone to drive you home back as you will not be safe to drive on your own.
